The fluorescent lights of the history classroom hummed with a sterile indifference that mirrored the demeanor of its occupant. Professor Alistair Finch, a man whose sharp features seemed perpetually etched with a blend of boredom and intellectual disdain, stood at the front of the lecture hall, his gaze sweeping over the sea of young faces. His eyes, like polished obsidian, seemed to linger on me for a fraction of a second longer than on anyone else. It was a subtle thing, a flicker of recognition, but I caught it. He was watching. He had been watching since the first day, and his attention was a predator’s focus, not a teacher’s casual observation.

“Today,” Finch’s voice was a dry rasp, devoid of inflection, “we delve into the Punic Wars. A conflict that reshaped the Mediterranean, a testament to strategic brilliance, and a stark reminder of the brutal realities of power.”

He paced the front of the room, his tweed jacket rustling with each movement. The students around me scribbled diligently in their notebooks, their faces a mixture of feigned interest and genuine confusion. They were the usual Argentum fare: privileged, entitled, and utterly unprepared for anything that required actual intellectual effort. Most of them were here because their fathers had bought their way in, or because their family name opened doors that mere merit could never breach. They were rich snobs, and they were my first target.
