The digital clock on my desk glowed 3:17 AM. Daniel’s rhythmic breathing was the only sound in the room, a steady counterpoint to the frantic pulse pounding in my own ears. Sleep, that elusive phantom, had abandoned me for the fifth consecutive night. My mind, a tireless engine of calculation and analysis, churned through the day’s events, dissecting every interaction, every subtle shift in expression, every word spoken and unspoken.

I sat up, the springs of the bed groaning softly. The darkness of the room offered no comfort, only the familiar shapes of furniture and the faint, green glow of the exit sign down the hall. Behind my closed eyelids, the maze was already forming, its stone walls stretching into an infinite, oppressive darkness. His voice, my father’s voice, echoed through the twisting corridors: *“You are mine. You will always be mine.”*

I pushed the vision away, a familiar, practiced maneuver that still left a residue of icy dread. This was the price of my existence, the toll extracted by a childhood spent under the shadow of a man who saw his son not as a person, but as a possession.
