The first week of classes at Argentum College was a masterclass in orchestrated chaos. The sprawling campus, so imposing on arrival, began to reveal its internal rhythms, its subtle hierarchies, and the unspoken rules that governed its inhabitants. For me, it was less about absorbing knowledge from lectures and more about absorbing the environment, cataloguing the players, and solidifying the foundations of my long-term strategy. My performance of mild-mannered mediocrity was going according to plan.

Daniel, bless his organized heart, navigated the academic landscape with the predictable efficiency of a well-programmed algorithm. He’d already created shared spreadsheets for our coursework, color-coded by priority and deadline. He attended every optional study session, took meticulous notes, and spoke with professors after class, his voice earnest and respectful. He was so earnest, in fact, that I sometimes found myself glancing at him, a flicker of something I couldn't quite identify – curiosity, perhaps, or a strange sort of pity – stirring within me. He was a valuable ally in the mundane aspects of student life, a constant reminder of the conventional path I was deliberately eschewing.
