The scent of ancient parchment and dried herbs hung heavy in Elias Thorne’s study, a comforting, almost tangible presence that had become Jardine’s sanctuary. Sunlight, strained through the leaded panes, painted shifting mosaics on the worn rug, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. Elias sat opposite her, his weathered hands clasped, his gaze steady and profound. He had been patient, explaining, guiding, chipping away at the walls of her ignorance with a gentle but persistent force.
“They are not dreams, Jardine,” he’d said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very bones of the old house. “Not in the way you understand them. They are echoes. Fragments of a past that is intrinsically yours, clamoring to be heard.”
Jardine traced the intricate carving on the wooden table between them, a knot of apprehension and exhilaration tightening in her chest. The visions, once fleeting and disorienting, were becoming more vivid, more insistent. Faces flickered at the edge of her sight, whispers brushed against her ears, and a strange, humming energy thrummed beneath her skin, a sensation she couldn't articulate but felt with every fiber of her being.
