Moonlight, fractured by the grimy panes of the domed roof, painted shifting mosaics on the derelict machinery. Jardine, clutching the cool, smooth surface of the Obsidian Locket, felt a prickle of unease that had nothing to do with the encroaching darkness. The pursuit had been relentless, a phantom menace that had stalked her from the shadowed alleys of the city to this desolate hilltop. And then, he had appeared.

Elias Thorne. The name itself felt like a whisper from a dream, a melody half-remembered. He’d emerged from the gloom as if he were woven from it, his presence both calming and unnerving. His eyes, the colour of aged parchment, held a depth that spoke of countless years and untold stories. He moved with a quiet grace, his lean frame cloaked in a dark, practical coat that seemed to absorb the scant light.

“They will not cease,” Thorne had said, his voice a low rumble that resonated in the cavernous space. He hadn’t raised it, yet it had cut through Jardine’s panicked breaths like a surgeon’s scalpel. “Not until they have what you carry, or until you are silenced.”
