The city lights blurred into streaks of neon as Jardine’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Each shadow seemed to stretch and writhe, morphing into the menacing shapes that haunted her waking moments and bled into her sleep. She’d dismissed the feeling of being watched, attributing it to the lingering unease from the artifact’s discovery, the unsettling dreams, and the gnawing questions about her own identity. But now, the feeling was a cold, hard certainty. They were real. They were coming for her.

She ducked into a narrow alleyway, the stench of stale refuse and damp concrete filling her lungs. Her breath hitched as the sound of heavy boots echoed from the street, closer than she liked. Elias Thorne’s warning, delivered with a gravity that had chilled her to the bone, replayed in her mind: “They are not to be trifled with, Jardine. Their reach is long, and their methods are… absolute.” He hadn't elaborated, his gaze distant, burdened by a knowledge he seemed reluctant to share. Now, she understood.

A flicker of movement at the alley’s entrance sent a jolt of adrenaline through her. Two figures, cloaked and indistinct in the gloom, paused, their heads turning as if sensing her presence. Jardine pressed herself further against the grimy brick wall, her palms slick with sweat. The artifact, a cool, smooth weight beneath the layers of her clothing, felt like a beacon, drawing them to her. It was both her burden and her only hope.
