Maryland. The name itself tasted like ash on Nick’s tongue now, a bitter reminder of the colossal error he’d made in venturing this far from home. He’d envisioned bustling streets, perhaps a quaint magical academy or a vibrant marketplace where he could haggle for enchanted trinkets. Instead, he found a landscape scarred by industry, a monotonous sprawl of factories that choked the horizon with plumes of acrid smoke. And the wizards. The sheer, unnerving number of them, shuffling, stumbling, their limbs unresponsive, their eyes vacant. It was a chilling testament to a darkness he hadn’t fathomed, a truth he was only beginning to unearth.

He’d been sent here, he now knew with a sickening certainty. Deceived. Lured into a trap. His movements were a grotesque parody of locomotion, each step a laborious, agonizing drag. His legs, once capable of conjuring storms or weaving intricate illusions, now dangled uselessly, his body a puppet with severed strings. The sight was so profoundly disturbing, so utterly devoid of the vibrant magic Nick associated with his kind, that a primal fear seized him. His bladder betrayed him, a warm, humiliating flood seeping through his trousers.
