The sight of the wizard stumbling out of the factory, his limbs like useless, withered branches, had sent a cold dread coiling in Nick’s gut, a dread so potent it had betrayed him, staining his breeches with a mortifying warmth. He’d expected to be met with concern, perhaps even a flicker of understanding. Instead, a hand, surprisingly strong and rough, had clamped onto his arm, dragging him unceremoniously into the cavernous maw of the very factory he’d just witnessed disgorge its broken inhabitant.
