Maryland. The name itself now tasted like ash on Nick’s tongue, a bitter recollection of a journey that had promised adventure and delivered only a chilling, paralytic fear. He’d arrived with the naive optimism of a young wizard eager to explore, only to find himself thrust into a grim reality where the very essence of magic seemed to have withered away. Everywhere he looked, the tell-tale signs of a magical blight were evident: wizards, once vibrant and powerful, now lay prone and helpless, their abilities stolen, their bodies rendered immobile. It was a scene so horrifying, so profoundly wrong, that a primal fear had seized him, a fear so potent it had betrayed him in the most embarrassing way possible. Warmth, mortifyingly, spread through his trousers.

He’d barely had time to process the indignity, the sheer terror of it all, when a surprisingly strong hand clamped around his arm. It was a grip that spoke of a desperate, unyielding strength, and before he could even cry out, he was being dragged, unceremoniously, into the gaping maw of one of the imposing, soot-stained factories. The air inside was thick with the metallic tang of industry and something else… something acrid and unsettling. His eyes, still stinging from his involuntary tears, scanned the cavernous space, catching glimpses of strange contraptions and bubbling vats. And then he saw her.

She stood amidst the mechanical chaos, a figure who seemed to embody the very decay of the place. Her clothes were in tatters, clinging to her frame like a second skin, testament to a life lived on the fringes, a life of hardship. Her face, etched with lines of pain and a grim determination, was turned towards him, her eyes burning with an intensity that made Nick’s blood run cold. This was the scientist, the architect of this paralyzing plague.
