The air in Evergreen Toy Co. crackled, not with the usual festive hum of whirring machinery and cheerful chatter, but with a frantic, almost desperate energy. Dust motes danced like tiny, stressed-out elves in the shafts of weak afternoon sun filtering through the grimy windows. Christmas Eve was a mere twenty-four hours away, and the factory floor looked less like a workshop of wonder and more like a battlefield where deadlines were the enemy.
Claire, her charcoal suit replaced by a surprisingly practical, if slightly paint-splattered, pair of overalls, surveyed the scene with a hawk’s intensity. Her brow was furrowed, her lips pressed into a thin line as she ticked off items on her tablet. Each completed toy was a small victory, each still-in-progress assembly a gnawing anxiety. She’d never felt pressure like this before. Her usual world of spreadsheets and projections felt a million miles away, replaced by the tangible, sometimes sticky, reality of wood, paint, and stuffing.
“Ben, have you checked the paint drying times on the ‘Sparkle Unicorn’ horns?” she called out, her voice sharp but lacking its usual icy edge. It was a tone that had evolved from “efficiency expert” to “slightly panicked, but still in charge” leader.
