The air in Pineville crackled with an energy Claire Sterling hadn’t encountered before. It wasn’t the sharp, efficient hum of Manhattan, but a warm, buzzing symphony of community. It had started subtly, a few curious faces peering through the factory windows, then a tentative offer to help sort packing peanuts, and now, it was a full-blown, delightful invasion. The Evergreen Toy Co., once a quiet, slightly dusty bastion of forgotten dreams, was alive.
Claire, usually a commander of meticulously planned operations, found herself swept along in a tide of enthusiastic volunteers. They were a motley crew: Mrs. Gable, the formidable baker whose gingerbread men were legendary, now meticulously painting tiny wooden soldiers with a surprisingly steady hand. Young Timmy, who’d once been caught trying to ‘borrow’ a teddy bear, was now diligently stuffing plush animals, his face a mask of concentration. Even Mayor Higgins, his usual anxious frown replaced by a determined set to his jaw, was wrestling with a particularly stubborn box of puzzle pieces.
