Chapter 15
Claire's Christmas Ghost
A flashback reveals Claire's past disappointment that soured her holidays. This personal revelation fuels her desire to help Ben and the town, connecting her to the true spirit of Christmas.

Dust motes danced in the weak afternoon sun slanting through the grimy window, illuminating forgotten baubles and a faint, festive scent of pine and something vaguely like cinnamon. Claire, usually so adept at shutting out external noise and emotional clutter, found herself unusually distracted. A soft knock, tentative and apologetic, broke through her reverie. It was Ben, looking like a slightly rumpled elf who had just survived a whirlwind of tinsel and glitter. He held a chipped mug, steam curling from it like a tiny, festive cloud. “Thought you might need this,” he said, his voice warm, a stark contrast to the office’s chill. “It’s Arthur’s special blend. Mostly cinnamon and regret, I think, but it’s surprisingly good.”
