The Spark of an Idea

Claire Sterling believed in spreadsheets. She believed in Gantt charts. She believed in the satisfying *thwack* of a perfectly executed strategic pivot. What she did not believe in, not even a tiny, tinsel-shaped sliver of it, was magic. Or, for that matter, sentimentality. Both, in her experience, were inefficient. They led to delays, to poor decision-making, to the messy, unpredictable chaos that Sterling Acquisitions was designed to systematically eradicate.

And yet, here she was, staring at a dusty blueprint that looked less like a manufacturing schematic and more like a child’s fever dream. It was a design by Arthur, Ben’s grandfather, the man who’d apparently believed toy making was akin to conjuring. The paper, brittle with age, depicted a contraption of gears, springs, and what looked suspiciously like a miniature bellows. The accompanying notes, scrawled in a flamboyant, looping script, spoke of “joyful bellows” and “whispering gears that hum with merriment.”

“He called it the ‘Giggle-Bot,’” Ben said, his voice a warm baritone that seemed to vibrate with an almost palpable optimism. He gestured with a paint-splattered finger. “The idea was that it would tell jokes. Really terrible ones, but that was part of the charm. It would wiggle its arms and puff out its chest when it told a punchline.”
