Tom’s fingers traced the worn edges of the baseball card, a flicker of longing in his eyes. It was a rare one, a signed rookie card of a player he’d only ever seen on television, a legend in the making. His friend, Liam, had been bragging about it all week, showing it off with a careless swagger that Tom both envied and found slightly intimidating. Liam had a way of making everything he owned seem more valuable, more desirable, just by being near it. And Tom, with his own collection of well-loved but decidedly ordinary cards, felt a pang of inadequacy.

He shifted on the park bench, the afternoon sun warm on his face, but a cool unease settling in his stomach. Liam had been talking about a new trading meet-up, a place where serious collectors gathered, and where, Liam had hinted, some truly spectacular deals could be made. Tom knew his parents would never approve of him spending his allowance on something as speculative as a rare trading card, especially not when he still had chores to do and homework to finish. But the thought of being there, of holding something as impressive as Liam’s signed card, of perhaps even acquiring something equally magnificent, tugged at him.

“So, you in for Saturday?” Liam asked, his voice cutting through Tom’s thoughts. He was leaning against the park’s sturdy oak, tossing a small, smooth stone from hand to hand. “It’s gonna be epic. Older guys, guys who know their stuff. You could grab some serious heat.”
