The air in the abandoned observatory hung thick with the metallic tang of decay and the stale scent of forgotten dreams. Moonlight, thin and spectral, bled through the shattered dome, painting fractured patterns across the dusty floor. Julian traced the condensation on the grimy windowpane, his breath misting the glass. Beside him, Kyle kicked idly at a loose floorboard, his usual restless energy muted by a gnawing unease. Bruce, hunched over his laptop, the screen’s blue glow illuminating his anxious face, was a study in quiet desperation.
“Anything?” Julian finally asked, his voice barely a whisper, as if speaking too loudly might shatter the fragile silence.
Bruce shook his head, his fingers still flying across the keyboard. “Just more dead ends. The firewall on this old server is a nightmare. It’s like… it’s designed to keep people out, not just keep old data in.”
