It was a silence that didn’t soothe but suffocated, a void where the usual hum of existence had been brutally silenced. Each step they took felt like wading through molasses, a physical resistance that mirrored the growing dread coiling in her stomach. Asad’s hand, warm and steady, rested on her back, a silent anchor in the encroaching gloom.
“It’s close,” Asad murmured, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the oppressive quiet. His eyes, usually so clear and filled with a gentle light, were now sharp, scanning the periphery with an intensity that spoke of deep unease. The cosmic threads, which had been humming with a vibrant, almost song-like energy guiding them, now thrummed with a discordant, mournful vibration. They were frayed here, tangled in knots of despair, their light dimming as if struggling for breath.
They had followed the threads, a shimmering, invisible path woven through the fabric of reality, away from the sun-drenched paths and into a landscape that seemed to bleed color. The trees, once verdant and alive, were now skeletal, their branches twisted into grotesque, grasping claws against a sky the color of bruised plums. The ground beneath their feet was not soil but a gritty, gray dust that seemed to absorb all sound, all light.
