The air in Jax’s studio was thick with the scent of old vinyl and something else… something electric, like ozone before a storm. It was a cramped space, tucked away above a shuttered laundromat in a part of East London that felt forgotten by time. Sunlight, weak and dusty, slanted through a single grimy window, illuminating stacks of records that threatened to spill onto the floor. This was where Jax, the titan of the underground, held court, and where I, Anya, was slowly, painstakingly, finding my feet.
“No, no, no,” Jax’s voice, a low rumble that vibrated through the worn carpet, cut through my concentration. He stood behind me, his silhouette framed against the dim light, a shadow of authority. His hands, calloused from years of manipulating turntables, hovered over my shoulders, not quite touching, but his presence was a palpable force. “You’re rushing the transition. The crowd needs to feel the build, Anya. It’s not just about dropping the next track; it’s about taking them on a journey.”
I swallowed, my throat tight. My fingers, usually so steady when I was alone, felt clumsy on the mixer. I’d been trying to blend a blistering jungle anthem into a deeper, more soulful drum and bass track, a move Jax had suggested. It was supposed to be a showcase of my range, but I was fumbling it, the beat stuttering, a jarring discontinuity that made my stomach clench.
