The air in the cramped back room of The Cauldron tasted like stale beer and desperation. My fingers, still slick with sweat from my set, fumbled with the frayed ends of my headphones. The bass from the main room vibrated through the concrete floor, a physical manifestation of the lifeblood coursing through this city’s veins. I’d just finished my slot, a blur of adrenaline and carefully curated beats, and the usual post-set feeling of elation was already starting to fray at the edges, replaced by the familiar gnawing anxiety. Was it good enough? Did anyone *really* listen?
Then the door creaked open, and a man stepped in, silhouetted against the dim light of the hallway. He was all sharp angles and expensive fabric, a stark contrast to the worn denim and band tees that usually populated this space. A glint of gold caught my eye – a heavy chain around his neck, peeking from the collar of his crisp shirt. He moved with an unnerving stillness, like a predator assessing its prey.
“Anya, is it?” His voice was smooth, almost silken, but with an undertone that sent a shiver down my spine. It was the voice of someone who was used to getting what they wanted.
