The air in The Crypt was thick enough to chew, a potent cocktail of stale beer, sweat, and something undeniably electric. It was a familiar scent, one that clung to my clothes and settled deep in my lungs, a comforting promise of escape. Tonight, though, a different kind of current ran beneath the usual thrum. Jax’s set was a masterclass, each beat a calculated precision, a narrative woven from sound. He was a ghost in the machine, his presence felt more than seen, his control absolute. I watched him from the shadows near the back, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs, a nervous counterpoint to the relentless rhythm.

He’d been talking about the old guard, the pioneers, the ones who’d laid the foundations for this whole chaotic, beautiful empire. He spoke of them with a reverence that bordered on obsession, his voice a low growl over the mic, barely audible above the roar of the crowd. “They built this,” he’d said, his eyes sweeping over the packed dancefloor, “with blood, sweat, and vinyl. Don’t you ever forget that.”

It was after his set, amidst the throng of sweaty bodies and the lingering haze of smoke, that I heard it. A name. A name that shouldn’t have been in the same sentence as this concrete subculture. My mother’s name.
