The sky, which had been a meek, washed-out blue all morning, began to rumble with a low, discontented growl. Baba Yana, her weathered hands expertly adjusting the saddle on Babe’s broad back, glanced upwards. A frown creased her brow, not of fear, but of deep, familiar concern. The annual pilgrimage was only a day away, and the air, thick with the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke, now carried a hint of something wilder, something that whispered of disruption.

“This is not good, Babe,” she murmured, her voice a gravelly rasp. Babe, as if understanding every word, let out a soft snort, his massive frame shifting beneath her. His intelligent eyes, the color of warm, dark soil, seemed to hold a silent reassurance.

Across the village green, Elitsa was wrestling with a particularly stubborn buckle on Rosie’s ornate harness. Rosie, a pig of considerable girth and an even more considerable appetite, was currently investigating a dropped crust of bread with intense focus. Elitsa, her cheeks flushed with effort and a touch of exasperation, finally secured the strap. “There, Rosie! Ready for our grand adventure!” she chirped, patting Rosie’s flank. Rosie responded with a contented grunt, her ears twitching. Elitsa, however, felt a prickle of unease. The wind had picked up, rustling the leaves of the ancient oak trees with an agitated whisper.
