Chapter 4
A Secret Unearthed
The air in Plovdiv, usually thick with the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, was now heavy with a different kind of anticipation. The annual pig pilgrimage, a tradition as old as the gnarled oak trees that guarded the village, was upon them. Baba Yana, her face a roadmap of a life lived fully, surveyed the scene from her porch. Her prize pig, Babe, a mountain of pink flesh and quiet dignity, snuffled contentedly at her feet. He was more than a pig; he was a confidante, a steed, and, though few knew it, a keeper of ancient secrets.
“The winds are restless, Babe,” Baba Yana murmured, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. Babe nudged her hand with his broad snout, a gesture of understanding that always sent a shiver of wonder through her. She knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that this year’s pilgrimage would be unlike any other.
Down in the village square, Elitsa, her cheeks flushed with excitement, was meticulously polishing Rosie’s formidable tusks. Rosie, her pig, was a whirlwind of energy, a stark contrast to Babe’s placid demeanor. Elitsa, the youngest of the grandmothers, possessed a spirit as bright and boundless as the summer sky. She bounced on the balls of her feet, her gaze flitting towards the village bridge, the only link connecting Plovdiv to the outside world.
