Willow's Discovery

Willow finds a patch of wild strawberries, a welcome, albeit small, feast. Her connection to nature provides a moment of relief and sustenance for the weary group.

The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and the faint, sweet perfume of unseen blossoms, pressed in on Willow. Every rustle of a leaf, every scuttling sound from the undergrowth, was amplified, a symphony of the miniature world that had become their terrifying reality. They had been traversing a treacherous landscape of fallen pine needles, each one a colossal, prickly barrier, when Willow’s keen eyes, accustomed to spotting the subtlest signs of life in her grandmother’s garden, caught a flash of vibrant red.

“Wait!” she whispered, her voice barely a breath against the vastness of a single blade of grass. Max, ever on alert, immediately pulled Hoops and Pete to a halt, his hand instinctively reaching for the sturdy, if comically oversized, twig he’d adopted as a weapon.

Willow, her heart thrumming with a mixture of hope and trepidation, carefully navigated the needle-strewn forest floor. The others followed, their tiny forms dwarfed by the colossal, indifferent vegetation. The red she had seen was indeed a splash of color against the muted greens and browns of their surroundings. It was a wild strawberry. Not just one, but a small, precious patch, nestled amongst the roots of a towering dandelion.
