The dewdrop, once a shimmering beacon of hope, now seemed a mocking taunt. Its colossal size, a testament to their own minuscule stature, loomed over them, a miniature ocean they couldn’t possibly traverse. Max, ever the first to react, grumbled, kicking a pebble the size of a boulder. “Great. Just great. Another dead end. What now, genius?” he directed the last word at Pete, whose brow was already furrowed in concentration.

Pete, clutching his worn notebook as if it were a lifeline, squinted at the shimmering barrier ahead. “It’s… it’s a web, Max. A spider’s web. And it’s huge.” His voice, usually a quiet murmur, held a tremor of awe mixed with dread. The silken strands, thicker than any rope they’d ever seen, stretched across the path ahead, catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the enormous blades of grass. Each strand glinted with a sticky, almost greasy sheen, promising a swift and inescapable demise for any unfortunate creature that stumbled into its embrace.

Hoops, who had been bouncing on the balls of her feet, trying to inject some semblance of normalcy into their increasingly bizarre reality, stopped dead. Her usual effervescence seemed to deflate like a pricked balloon. “A spider? Oh, gross. Is it… is it still there?”
