The salt spray stung Elias’s eyes, a familiar sting that usually brought a sense of peace. Today, however, it tasted like fear. The engine of the ‘Sea Serpent’ chugged, a desperate heartbeat against the vast, indifferent expanse of the Atlantic. His hands, calloused and weathered, gripped the rod so tightly his knuckles were white. The bluefin, a leviathan of the deep, thrashed on the other end, its silver scales flashing like a beacon of his impending doom.

He’d hooked it an hour ago, a prize that would secure his family for months. But the fight had been too easy, too… convenient. Then he’d seen it – a shadow, vast and ancient, detaching itself from the murky depths. A great white, its dorsal fin a jagged sickle cutting through the water, had been on a collision course with his catch. Elias, in a moment of foolish bravado, had cranked harder, pulling the tuna away from its intended predator. A mistake. A colossal, life-threatening mistake.

Now, the shark was no longer a predator targeting prey. It was a hunter pursuing its usurper. The beast was a relentless shadow, a dark omen that circled the boat with unnerving patience. Elias could feel its presence, a primal terror that seeped into his bones. The water, once his domain, now felt like a hostile territory. He risked a glance over the stern. The shark was closer, its eyes like obsidian chips, reflecting the bruised grey sky. It was a predator of pure instinct, and Elias had trespassed.
