Commander Valerius surveyed the arid expanse of the desert from the reinforced viewport of his command vehicle. The sun beat down relentlessly, baking the sand and blurring the horizon. His fingers tapped a restless rhythm against the cool metal of his armrest. Elara, the phantom, the anomaly, had slipped through his grasp once more. The frustration was a bitter bile in his throat. Weeks of relentless pursuit, of deploying his most skilled operatives, and she remained elusive, a ghost flitting through the fringes of his control.
His gaze drifted to the dossier splayed across the console. Elara. Her face, captured in a grainy surveillance photo, stared back at him, a mask of polite indifference. He knew there was more beneath that placid surface, a fire waiting to be ignited. He could feel it, a prickling sensation on his skin, the same unease that had plagued him since her existence had first registered on his organization's sensitive instruments. She was not merely a pawn; she was a fulcrum, a pivot upon which centuries of careful balance teetered.
“Any sign?” he barked, his voice a low growl.
