Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Eileen arrives at Eldoria Academy and witnesses a student 'ascend' into golden sparks. Despite warnings not to speak of it, she finds a forbidden book about the 'Covenant of the Silent Bell' and is confronted by Ms. Vane. That night, the bell rings, and Eileen sees a procession of students heading to the East Wing. She steps into the hall, choosing to follow.
The gate didn’t just open; it swallowed her shadow. Eileen blinked, but the dark shape at her feet remained stretched into the iron bars as if it had been pinned there. She tugged her suitcase forward, and the shadow snapped back to normal. The gate stood wide now, revealing a cobblestone path that wound through a garden of silver ferns and glass flowers. Beyond it rose Eldoria Academy—a castle of shifting turrets, each one slowly rotating as though searching for something.
A boy with moss-green eyes and a patchwork coat jogged up to her. “New girl, right? I’m Leo. Try not to stare at the towers; they get nervous.” He handed her a schedule card that shimmered with ink. “Assembly’s in ten. Don’t be late. They’ll know.”
“Who’s ‘they’?” Eileen asked, but Leo was already walking, so she hurried after him, her boots scraping against stones that hummed faintly.
The Great Hall was a cavern of floating candles and a ceiling that showed the night sky—even though it was only noon. Students sat at four long tables, their chatter a low buzz. Eileen took a seat near Leo. The headmaster, a tall woman with iridescent hair that curled like smoke, raised her hand. The room fell silent.
“We welcome our new student, Eileen,” the headmaster said, and Eileen felt a dozen pairs of eyes slide toward her. “And we bid farewell to Marcus, who has ascended.”
A boy at the front table—Marcus, she guessed—stood up. His form flickered like a candle in wind, then collapsed into a shower of golden sparks. The sparks rose to the ceiling and vanished. The students clapped politely. Eileen’s breath caught. She turned to Leo, but he was staring straight ahead, a practiced smile on his face.
“What just happened?” she whispered.
“He ascended,” Leo said, his voice flat. “It’s tradition. We don’t talk about it.”
After Assembly, Eileen tried to ask more, but Leo melted into the crowd. She found her dormitory—a small stone room with a window that looked onto the garden—and dropped her suitcase on the bed. Something didn’t add up. Marcus hadn’t left; he’d dissolved. And no one else seemed bothered.
She needed answers. Marcus’s room was two doors down, unlocked. Inside, the bed was stripped, the wardrobe empty, except for a single book on the nightstand. It was old, the leather cover worn smooth, and titled The Covenant of the Silent Bell. Eileen opened it. The first page read: Every seventh day, a student is chosen to ascend. The bell rings at midnight. Attend the gathering and do not speak.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway. Eileen stuffed the book into her coat and slipped out just as a tall woman with graying hair appeared. Ms. Vane, the headmaster’s assistant, looked down at her with cold eyes.
“I see you’ve found a keepsake,” she said. “Return it, or face the consequences.”
Eileen’s fingers tightened around the book’s spine. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ms. Vane’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Very well. You’ve been warned. The bell rings at midnight. You will not ignore it.” She turned and walked away, her footsteps fading.
That night, a low, resonant tone rolled through the castle. Eileen’s heart hammered. She crept to the window and saw a procession of shadowy figures—students—walking toward the East Wing. Their movements were synchronized, their eyes forward.
She had a choice: stay in her room, safe and clueless, or follow them and learn the truth. The book had warned her, but Ms. Vane’s words echoed too. The bell rang again.
Eileen opened her door and stepped into the hall.
