Chapter 54

Episode 54

The endless procession of dust-choked wagons, a relentless river of canvas and wood, had become a familiar, albeit unwelcome, sight. Kicking Bear, his gaze fixed on the horizon, felt a familiar knot of anger tighten in his chest. Each wagon represented a further encroachment, a deeper scar upon the land that his people had cherished for generations. He had witnessed firsthand the casual disregard for the earth – the trampling of sacred grasses, the fouling of clear streams, the senseless slaughter of game animals that were more than just sustenance, but kin.

He remembered the day, not so long ago, when a group of hunters had carelessly left behind the carcass of a magnificent bull bison, its meat left to rot while they moved on, indifferent to the waste. The small mounds, marked by stones and offerings, had been disturbed, the earth churned up by the careless hooves of settler horses. It was an unforgivable transgression, a violation of the sacred resting places of their ancestors. Kicking Bear had stood with the elders, his heart heavy with a grief that went beyond personal loss. It was the grief for a people whose connection to the land was being systematically severed, whose spiritual foundations were being eroded with each passing wagon.
