Chapter 9
A Brother's Plea
Cyrus, driven by his own quest, attempts to communicate with Jessie. He reveals fragments of their shared past, a plea for understanding amidst the brewing conflict.
The chill of the alley was a familiar discomfort, a second skin Jessie had worn for as long as he could remember. It clung to him, a constant reminder of the gnawing emptiness that resided deep within his chest. Tonight, the emptiness felt particularly acute, a hollow ache amplified by the cryptic message that had landed in his worn backpack earlier that day. A folded scrap of paper, slipped into the lining by a hand he hadn’t seen, bearing only a scrawled address and a single, chilling word: Brother.

Mr. Smith’s pronouncements about their origins—a vague tale of orphaned street rats, abandoned and forgotten—had always felt too neat, too convenient. Jessie’s recurring dreams, fractured images of a warm, sun-drenched room and a woman’s gentle touch, whispered a different story.
“You’re staring at that paper like it’s going to bite you,” Kai’s voice, a low, steady murmur, cut through his thoughts. She leaned against the grimy brick wall, her eyes, sharp and observant, fixed on him. Her presence was a grounding force, a constant in the chaotic swirl of his existence.
