The alley air, usually thick with the scent of stale refuse and damp concrete, now tasted of something sharp and metallic. Fred, ever the impulsive spark, had pushed too far. His defiance, a constant hum beneath Mr. Smith's suffocating control, had finally ignited. It had started with a stolen loaf of bread, a small act of rebellion against the meager rations, but it had escalated. Mr. Smith, his face a mask of controlled fury, had cornered Fred near the abandoned warehouse district, his voice a low growl that promised retribution.

"You think you can flout me, boy?" Mr. Smith had hissed, his hand clamping down on Fred's thin arm with surprising strength. "After all I've done for you?"

Fred, his eyes blazing with a familiar mix of fear and defiance, had wrenched himself free. "Done for us? You feed us scraps and lock us down like caged rats!"
