The air crackled with a coldness that had nothing to do with the usual chill of evening. It was a gnawing, intrusive cold, the kind that seeped into your bones and whispered of things best left undisturbed. Around us, the familiar, comforting shapes of our kingdom were being swallowed by an encroaching darkness, a shadow that moved with a purpose, not just the absence of light. It was the Weinach, no longer a distant rumble of a prophecy, but a tangible, suffocating presence.
Beside me, Elara stood remarkably still. Her hand, which had been resting lightly on my arm moments before, was now clenched, her knuckles white. Yet, her gaze was steady, fixed on the advancing gloom. I could feel the tremor in her stance, a silent testament to the fear that was beginning to coil in my own gut. But her eyes, when they met mine, held a spark of defiance, a quiet strength that somehow anchored me.
"It's here, Lyra," she said, her voice a low, steady current against the rising wind. The wind itself seemed to moan, carrying with it a scent of decay and something ancient, something hungry.
