The sun, once a bold splash of gold across the sky, now seemed to bleed its light, a hazy, reluctant farewell to the day. A chill, deeper than the usual evening breeze, snaked through the castle corridors, carrying with it a subtle scent of damp earth and something else, something vaguely… unsettling. Prince Lyra felt it prickle his skin, a phantom touch that made the fine hairs on his arms stand on end. He held the artifact, the Sunstone, clutched tight in his palm. It pulsed with a faint warmth, a steady, comforting rhythm against his skin, yet the comforting hum seemed to falter, as if even its radiant energy was being subtly muted by the encroaching gloom.

He stood on the highest parapet of the castle, the wind whipping his tunic around his legs, his gaze fixed on the horizon. The familiar rolling hills, usually vibrant with the greens and browns of a kingdom at peace, were now shrouded in a deepening twilight that felt unnatural, premature. The sky itself was a bruised purple, and the stars, which should have been starting to peek through, remained stubbornly hidden, as if veiled by an invisible, heavy curtain. It was as if the very air held its breath, waiting.

“It’s coming, isn’t it?” he murmured, the words snatched away by the wind. He didn't need to name it. The feeling was a palpable presence, a shadow stretching from the edges of the world. The Weinach. Silas’s cryptic warnings, once distant echoes of ancient lore, now resonated with a chilling immediacy. He remembered Silas’s eyes, ancient and dark, when he’d spoken of the encroaching darkness, the creeping tendrils of despair that sought to smother all light and joy.
