The air grew thinner as I climbed, each breath a little sharper, a little colder. Silas’s words echoed in my mind, a gentle rumble of wisdom against the rising tide of my own anxieties. “The path to the artifact is not merely one of distance, Prince Lyra, but of spirit.” He had said it with a twinkle in his ancient eyes, as if he knew the gnawing doubt that had settled in my gut since leaving the familiar stone walls of my father’s castle. Now, with my trusty, if slightly over-enthusiastic, companion Pip trotting faithfully beside me, the ‘path of spirit’ felt more like a steep, winding rock face.

The Whispering Woods had been a challenge, true, with their rustling leaves and the unsettling feeling of being watched. The Bridge of Riddles had tickled my brain and tested Pip’s patience (and mine, if I’m honest). But this… this was different. The trees had thinned out, replaced by jagged outcrops of grey rock that clawed at the sky. The ground underfoot was a treacherous mix of loose scree and stubborn, wind-battered shrubs that clung to life with fierce determination. Every step felt like a gamble, a careful placement of boot, a quick check of balance.

“Are we nearly there, Lyra?” Pip’s voice, usually so bright, held a touch of weariness. He nudged my leg with his snout, his floppy ears drooping slightly. He was a small creature, a scruffy terrier mix with an boundless spirit, but even his boundless spirit had its limits when faced with such unrelenting uphill struggle.
