A Glimpse of Fear
Lyra confesses his deepest fear to Silas: that he isn't brave enough. Silas reassures him that true courage lies in facing one's doubts and acting despite them.
The soft glow of Silas’s lantern flickered, casting dancing shadows on the rough-hewn walls of his small dwelling. Outside, the wind had begun to sigh through the ancient pines, a mournful sound that echoed the turmoil within me. I sat on a low stool, my hands clasped so tightly my knuckles were white, staring into the embers of the fire. Silas, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and wisdom, watched me with eyes that seemed to hold the quiet understanding of a thousand sunsets.
“You carry a heavy burden, young prince,” he said, his voice a gentle rumble like distant thunder. “More than just the weight of a kingdom.”
I swallowed, the lump in my throat feeling as large as a stone. The words I needed to speak felt trapped, like birds beating their wings against a cage. All day, since Silas had spoken of the Weinach and the artifact, a cold dread had been coiling in my stomach. It wasn’t the Weinach itself that scared me, not really. It was the thought of *me*, Prince Lyra, facing it.
