The air in Silas’s cave was thick with the scent of dried herbs and ancient dust. My eyes, accustomed to the polished halls of my palace, blinked against the dim light filtering through the narrow opening. It was here, amidst the jumble of scrolls and strange, gnarled roots that Silas, the hermit of the Whispering Woods, had chosen to impart his wisdom. He sat cross-legged on a woven mat, his eyes, like chips of polished obsidian, fixed on me. I shifted my weight, the rough wool of my tunic itching against my skin, a stark contrast to the silks I usually wore. My heart, which had been thrumming with a mix of excitement and apprehension since I’d arrived, now settled into a more thoughtful rhythm.
“You seek the Sunstone,” Silas began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to echo the very stones of the cave. “You believe it a shield, a barrier against the darkness that creeps at our borders.” He paused, a faint smile playing on his lips. “A shield it is, in a way. But not of stone and mortar. Not of steel and magic alone.”
I leaned forward, my earlier dreams of a glittering gem that would simply shimmer and repel all evil fading like mist in the morning sun. “What do you mean, wise Silas?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. The adventure I had imagined, the straightforward quest for a magical object, was already proving more complex.
