Chapter 8
A Surprise for Mom and Dad
Bell carefully puts all the little notes into a colorful jar. She decorates it with ribbons and glitter. She can't wait to give her special gift to her parents.
Bell’s little fingers were sticky with glue, but she didn’t mind one bit. The colorful paper scraps, the shimmering glitter, the bright red ribbon – they were all part of her special plan. Her bedroom, usually a whirlwind of toys and drawings, was now a quiet, focused space. On her desk, a large, empty glass jar sat waiting. It was a pickle jar, really, one that Mom had saved from a particularly delicious batch of pickles a few weeks ago. Bell had washed it out carefully, making sure not even a hint of pickle smell remained, and now it was ready for its new purpose.
She held up a tiny folded piece of paper, no bigger than her thumbnail. On it, in her neatest handwriting, she had written, “Remember the time we built the biggest sandcastle ever at the beach?” She’d even drawn a little sun and a wave next to it. This was the first note, and it felt important. She’d spent all afternoon writing. There were notes about the time they’d all gone ice skating and Dad had held her hands so tight, notes about the silly songs Mom used to sing when she was making breakfast, notes about the way they’d all snuggled on the couch to watch movies with popcorn. She’d even written notes about things she loved about them, like Mom’s warm smile and Dad’s deep laugh.
Carefully, she dropped the sandcastle note into the jar. It landed with a soft rustle. Then came the ice skating note, followed by the silly song note. Each tiny piece of paper represented a precious memory, a flicker of happiness that she wanted to share. She imagined her parents opening the jar, reading the notes, and remembering all the good times. Maybe, just maybe, it would make them think about how much she missed those times.
