The chill in the air wasn't just the late autumn breeze seeping through the old manor windows; it was a palpable weight that settled in my chest the moment I saw my mother’s face. The usual mask of polite detachment had crumbled, revealing a raw, vulnerable fear I hadn't witnessed since I was a child. She sat by the fireplace, the flames dancing in her wide, troubled eyes, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The tea she’d poured sat untouched, a silent testament to her distress.
“Mother?” I began, my voice softer than usual, the concern for her overriding any lingering annoyance from our previous stilted conversations. I’d come to her seeking answers, not to witness her unravel.
She looked up, and in that look, I saw a lifetime of secrets, of burdens carried alone. “Elara,” she whispered, her voice raspy. “You shouldn’t have come here. Not now.”
