Chapter 5
The Shadow's Grasp
The shadow creature lunges, its darkness enveloping Lumi. Mano feels a surge of protectiveness, realizing the delicate light of his friend is in grave danger, and the magic of the night hangs in the balance.
The velvety darkness of the garden seemed to deepen, not with the gentle embrace of night, but with a creeping, cold dread. Mano, his heart still thrumming with the wonder of Lumi’s gentle pulses, felt a prickle of unease crawl up his spine. Lumi, nestled in the palm of his hand, had suddenly gone still, its usual cheerful blinking replaced by a faint, wavering glow. A shadow, darker than any shadow Mano had ever seen, detached itself from the gnarled trunk of the old oak tree. It wasn't merely an absence of light; it felt like a presence, a hungry void that seemed to suck the very warmth from the air.
Lumi’s light flickered, a tiny, desperate plea. Mano understood. This was the shadow creature, the one that had cast a fleeting chill in their earlier explorations. But now, it was no longer a fleeting chill. It was a tangible threat, a wisp of pure malevolence coalescing before them. The air grew heavy, pressing down on Mano’s chest, making it hard to breathe. He could feel Lumi trembling, its tiny body vibrating with fear. The creature stretched, elongating like a spilled ink blot, its form indistinct yet undeniably menacing. It moved with an unnatural silence, gliding over the dewy grass without disturbing a single blade.
“Lumi?” Mano whispered, his voice barely audible. Lumi responded with a weak, intermittent flash, a pale imitation of its former brilliance. The shadow creature was drawing closer, its amorphous shape seeming to writhe with an insatiable hunger. Mano’s gaze darted from Lumi to the approaching darkness. He remembered the stories his grandmother used to tell, tales of creatures that fed on light, on joy, on the very essence of happiness. This felt like one of those creatures.
