The air in the park was thick with the scent of freshly cut grass and the faint, sweet aroma of cotton candy from a distant vendor. Harper, perched on the edge of a brightly colored picnic blanket, watched Remi chase a butterfly with a delighted squeal, her curly blonde hair a halo in the afternoon sun. Gunner, a miniature tornado of energy, was attempting to scale a park bench with the determined focus of a seasoned mountaineer. Sean, Harper’s scruffy terrier mix, was blissfully unaware of their antics, nose deep in a discarded bag of chips. It was, for all intents and purposes, a picture-perfect Saturday.
Except for the other woman sitting a few feet away, meticulously arranging a platter of impossibly perfect fruit. Braelynn.
Harper took a slow sip of her lukewarm coffee, her gaze flicking to Braelynn’s perfectly manicured hands. The woman was radiating an aura of strained civility, a stark contrast to the storm clouds Harper usually associated with her. This détente, this fragile truce forged in the aftermath of the near-disaster that had involved a runaway dog, a spilled ice cream cone, and a surprisingly eloquent outburst from Remi about sharing, was still so new it felt like walking on eggshells.
