The first morning after felt like a soft, grey blanket draped over everything. The usual vibrant hues of our home seemed muted, the air thick with an unspoken quiet. I padded into the kitchen, the floorboards cool beneath my bare feet, and saw Leo already there, his small back hunched over a bowl of cereal. He didn’t look up when I entered, and that was the first sign that something was off. Usually, he’d greet me with a bright, “Morning, MJ!” or a playful tug at my shirt. Today, silence.

I poured myself a glass of water, the ice clinking loudly in the stillness. “Morning, Leo,” I tried, my voice a little rough. He just nodded, his eyes fixed on the swirling milk in his bowl. A knot began to tighten in my stomach. I knew Leo. I knew his quiet intensity, his observant nature. He saw things. And he reported things. I’d seen it happen before, small infractions, minor triumphs, all meticulously relayed to our mother, who, bless her fiercely protective heart, treated every report like a matter of national security.

I sat down opposite him, trying to project an air of calm, of normalcy. “Sleep well?” I asked, my gaze flicking to his face. He finally looked up, his eyes wide and serious, like a tiny judge about to deliver a verdict. There was no accusation in them, not yet, but a profound, unsettling awareness. “MJ,” he began, his voice soft but clear, “I saw you last night.”
