Elias finds residents with flickers of memory or unease. He tries to awaken them, especially Lily, but the lane suppresses these intrusive, unpleasant thoughts.

The sun beat down with a relentless, punishing intensity, each ray a burning lash against Elias’s skin. The air shimmered, distorting the already surreal landscape of Mirage Lane into a wavering mirage within a mirage. He’d been here for days, days bled into a timeless expanse of pastel-colored houses and perpetually smiling faces, and the gnawing unease had only intensified. He sought cracks, fissures in the perfect facade, and he was beginning to find them.

He’d started with Mr. Abernathy, the kindly gentleman who always seemed to be tending his immaculate rose bushes, the very same roses Elias had seen yesterday, and the day before, a perfect, unchanging bloom. Elias had approached him, not with the blunt force of accusation, but with the gentle probing of a fellow traveler.

“Beautiful roses, Mr. Abernathy,” Elias had said, his voice carefully modulated, an echo of the forced pleasantries he’d learned to adopt. “They never seem to fade.”
