The air in Mirage Lane shimmered, not just with the oppressive heat that had birthed it, but with a subtle, almost imperceptible hum. Elias felt it in his teeth, a low vibration that seemed to resonate from the perfectly manicured lawns and the perpetually sun-drenched facades of the houses. He’d spent the better part of the day piecing together fragments, conversations like scattered puzzle pieces that refused to form a coherent picture. The residents here, the ones who smiled too widely and offered lemonade that tasted perpetually of summer afternoons, were remarkably adept at deflection.

He’d cornered Mr. Abernathy by the immaculate white picket fence of his equally immaculate white picket house. Abernathy, who looked like a man perpetually in his late thirties, had the easy charm of a game show host. Elias had started with a casual question, a probe disguised as idle curiosity. “This street,” Elias began, gesturing vaguely, “it feels… timeless. Like it’s always been here.”

Abernathy’s smile widened, crinkling the corners of his eyes. “That’s the beauty of it, Elias. It’s a place where time doesn’t quite… intrude. We’re all just happy to be here, aren’t we?” His gaze swept across the street, taking in the children playing hopscotch, the women chatting over flowerbeds, the men tinkering with impossibly shiny lawnmowers. It was a tableau of domestic bliss, so perfect it felt brittle.
