The afternoon sun beat down on Elias, a relentless hammer against the anvil of his skull. The air shimmered, not with the usual desert haze, but with something thicker, more viscous, as if the very atmosphere had begun to sweat. He’d been walking for hours, the spectral outline of Mirage Lane a constant, taunting presence on the horizon. It was there, undeniably there, a perfect, impossible neighborhood shimmering in the oppressive heat. And it was there, he now knew with a certainty that chilled him despite the inferno, that Lily might be.

He’d dismissed it at first, the nagging resemblance. A trick of the light, a cruel echo in the labyrinth of his grief. But the more he observed the woman they called “Eleanor”—the way her laughter tinkled like wind chimes, the slight tilt of her head when she was pondering, the very shape of her eyes—the more the carefully constructed walls around his heart began to crumble. Eleanor wasn't just *like* Lily; she *was* Lily, or a ghost of her, a phantom sculpted from memory and longing.

He’d tried to engage her, to probe. “Eleanor,” he’d begun yesterday, his voice raspy, “do you ever… do you ever feel like you’ve forgotten something important?”
