Chapter 4
The Lane's Embrace
Elias learns Mirage Lane's rules: it appears in heatwaves, is hard to leave, and erases memories. Residents relive idealized lives, unaware of their past.
The asphalt shimmered, not with the usual heat-haze distortion of the desert, but with a strange, almost crystalline clarity. Elias Thorne, his brow furrowed beneath the brim of his fedora, felt a prickle of unease crawl up his spine. He’d seen mirages before, geological trickery born of sand and sun, but this… this was different. This was deliberate. The abandoned houses, perfectly preserved despite decades of neglect, seemed to hum with a silent energy. And now, as the thermometer nudged past 115 degrees, a street had coalesced from the shimmering air, a vision of manicured lawns and cheerful, pastel-colored houses. Mirage Lane. The name tasted strange on his tongue, a blend of the illusory and the concrete.
He stepped out of his dust-caked sedan, the heat hitting him like a physical blow. The silence here was profound, broken only by the distant, almost imperceptible drone of cicadas. He walked towards the street, his footsteps crunching on gravel that seemed too perfectly placed. The houses were immaculate, each window gleaming, each picket fence pristine. It was an architect’s dream, a testament to a forgotten era of suburban perfection. But Elias Thorne dealt in the ghosts of structures, the secrets whispered by decaying brick and splintered wood. This place felt too alive, too clean.
As he neared the first house, a woman emerged from the doorway. She was young, perhaps in her early twenties, with a cascade of blonde hair and a smile that could melt glaciers. She wore a simple floral dress, the kind his mother might have worn in faded photographs. “Welcome!” she chirped, her voice like wind chimes. “We don’t get many visitors out this way.”
