Chapter 18
Return to the Real
They emerge from the heat haze, disoriented but free. Elias and Lily face the harsh, uncertain world, forever changed by their experience in Mirage Lane.
The air outside Mirage Lane was a brutal, indifferent assault. It clawed at Elias’s lungs, thick with dust and the memory of a heat that had been so absolute it had forged a reality. Her eyes, once clouded with a placid, unthinking joy, now held a dawning horror, a flicker of recognition that was both agonizing and exhilarating.
“Elias?” Her voice was a reedy whisper, barely audible above the sigh of the wind. She looked at her hands, turning them over as if seeing them for the first time. The perfect nails, the unblemished skin – remnants of the illusion, now cast in the harsh light of reality.
