Chapter 17
Flight from Paradise
Elias leads the awakening residents, including Lily, towards the fading boundaries of Mirage Lane as the heatwave subsides and the lane dissolves.
The air thrummed with a frantic energy, a discordant symphony against the usual placid hum of Mirage Lane. Elias, his lungs burning with the effort, urged the small, hesitant group forward. Each step was a battle against the lane’s insidious pull, a silent, psychic tug-of-war against the comfort and oblivion it offered. Her hair, the same shade of sun-bleached blonde as his sister’s, caught the shimmering, distorted light of the dissolving lane. She stumbled, Elias reaching out to steady her. Her hand, cool and trembling, gripped his arm.
"Elias," she whispered, her voice a fragile thread, "I… I don't understand. Where are we going? It feels… wrong."
