The aroma of warm vanilla and caramelized sugar was Anya’s sanctuary. It clung to her like a second skin, a comforting cloak woven from countless hours spent coaxing perfection from flour, butter, and eggs. Her tiny bakery, a jewel box of pastel hues and delicate displays, was her world. But lately, a shadow had begun to creep into its sunlit corners: her mother, Elena. Elena, with her heart as vast as the Russian steppes and her intentions as solid as granite, saw Anya’s quiet life not as a triumph of dedication, but as a blank canvas for her own matchmaking endeavors.
“Anya, darling,” Elena’s voice, a melodious blend of concern and insistence, would drift from the doorway, usually accompanied by the clatter of a teacup or the rustle of a newspaper. “Mrs. Ivanova was telling me about her nephew. A lovely young man, a dentist. Very stable. You should meet him.”
Anya would flinch, her hands instinctively tightening around a piping bag. “Mama, I’m busy. And I’m not interested in meeting dentists. Or accountants. Or… anyone.”
