Elena stood by the window, the lace curtain a delicate veil between her and the bustling street below. Anya’s bakery, a cheerful splash of pastel pink and cream, hummed with its usual afternoon rhythm. The scent of warm sugar and vanilla, usually a comforting balm, today carried a faint undercurrent of something else – a lightness, a joy that seemed to emanate from her daughter, a joy Elena hadn’t seen bloom so fully before.

She watched as Liam, the architect from upstairs, emerged from the shop. He wasn’t just a customer; he was a fixture now, a familiar silhouette leaning against the doorframe, a conspiratorial smile shared with Anya as she handed him a small, carefully wrapped box. Elena’s heart gave a strange little lurch. It wasn’t the usual flutter of anticipation, the “is this it?” that had accompanied so many of her previous introductions. This was different. This was… observation. And in that observation, a seed of doubt began to sprout.

Liam had been a whirlwind of charm and efficiency when he’d moved in. Elena had, of course, immediately assessed his suitability. Tall, well-dressed, successful – ticking all the boxes she’d meticulously prepared for Anya’s hypothetical husband. But Anya, bless her stubborn heart, had initially met him with a fiery defensiveness that had both frustrated and secretly amused Elena. The spilled coffee incident, the way he’d so effortlessly smoothed things over, the genuine apology, the offer to repaint the entire wall – it had been a masterclass in suave problem-solving. And Anya, flustered and blushing, had been captivated, despite herself.
