The air in Anya’s small kitchen hung thick with the acrid scent of burnt sugar and the metallic tang of despair. Her prized, industrial-grade mixer, the very heart of her baking operation, lay in a heap of twisted metal and sparking wires. The large order for the summer festival, the one that had felt like the golden ticket to her dream patisserie, now seemed an insurmountable impossibility. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, blurring the already chaotic scene.
Elena bustled in, a floral apron tied neatly over her dress, a plate of freshly baked pirozhki in hand. "Anya, darling, I made extra. You must keep your strength up. And is that… oh, heavens!" Her eyes widened, taking in the wreckage. "What happened to your… your metal beast?"
Anya could only shake her head, a choked sob escaping her lips. "It’s dead, Mamma. Completely dead. And the festival order… I can't do it without it."
