Sparks Fly Over Coffee
Anya and Liam share a charged moment over a spilled latte. He's intrigued by her passion for baking; she's disarmed by his genuine interest. Elena, however, sees only a potential husband.
The aroma of freshly ground coffee beans was Anya’s sanctuary, a fragrant cloud that softened the edges of her often-anxious world. Today, however, the comforting scent was tinged with the sharp tang of impending doom. Elena, her mother, was on a mission, and Anya knew, with a sinking heart, that it involved a strategically placed teacup and a man she’d never met.
“Anya, darling, are you ready for your special guest?” Elena’s voice, a silken blend of sweetness and steel, drifted from the front of the tiny bakery. Anya, meticulously arranging a display of lemon tarts, flinched. “Guest? Mama, I’m working. You know I have to have everything perfect for the Saturday rush.”
Elena appeared in the doorway, a vision of determined elegance in a floral dress that somehow managed to look both grandmotherly and aggressively fashionable. Her eyes, sharp and assessing, scanned the room, missing nothing. “Nonsense, my little bird. A little break for tea is good for the soul. And this is no ordinary guest. This is Mr. Liam O’Connell. From upstairs.”
