Carter inadvertently reveals knowledge of future events or technology, astonishing the scholar and raising further questions about his origins.
The air in the scholar’s study was thick with the scent of dried herbs and aging parchment. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of scrolls and heavy, leather-bound tomes. Carter, perched precariously on a stool fashioned from a sturdy oak branch, felt a familiar unease prickle at his skin. He had been so careful, so guarded, yet here he was, once again teetering on the edge of revealing too much.
Master Elmsworth, his brow furrowed in thought, meticulously examined the strange, metallic orb that Carter had brought with him. The scholar’s fingers, gnarled with age but surprisingly nimble, traced the intricate, almost alien symbols etched into its surface. “This… this is unlike any artifact I have ever encountered,” he murmured, his voice a low rasp. “The craftsmanship is beyond anything known to our artisans. It hums with a peculiar energy, a resonance that speaks of… possibilities.”
Carter swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. He had been trying to explain the device, the time-travel machine, in the simplest terms he could conjure. He’d spoken of it as a ‘great carriage’ that could travel ‘faster than the wind,’ a notion that Elmsworth had accepted with a scholar’s open mind, albeit with a healthy dose of skepticism. But now, as Elmsworth’s gaze shifted to him, sharp and inquisitive, Carter felt the weight of his secret pressing down.
